Captain Bob is an interesting and accomplished character. Despite having been raised in pools summer in and out and receiving a Northwestern University athletic scholarship for the swim team, Bob had never been intrigued by the underwater world. However, while working for Club Med teaching First Aid and CPR to their employees around Mexico and the Caribbean, some fun loving souls talked the Captain into giving scuba a try. That’s where his scuba life began.
While on his first open water dive (on the continental shelf off the coast of Eleuthera), the Captain had a close encounter with a rather large hammerhead! Over the course of that summer, Bob became hooked on scuba and obtained his Advanced Open Water certification. With that, he enjoyed many day and night dives with the Club Med crew from place to place.
Bob’s dream became a reality as he earned PADI Scuba Instructor rating, First Aid and CPR Instructor rating and United States Coast Guard certified, 50 ton Master Captain License (rated for the Great Lakes, Inland Waters and costal sea waters). He has converted his boat to a part time scuba charter boat and modified his RV for mobile classes, quarry diving days, barbeques and equipment storage as well as partnered with a variety of local scuba shops and resorts to teach and lead scuba adventures. His water adventures don’t end there though! Recently, Bob experienced a most exciting and complimentary invitation from the Shedd Aquarium to join its group of divers. While the Captain is trying to volunteer to dive any tank at any time, he can be found regularly in the Wild Reef Exhibit at show time every other Saturday morning. You can check out his schedule on the calendar page. The Captain’s other noteworthy and related achievements include his background in environmental engineering, former Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructor through the American Red Cross, and a former Water Safety and Swimming Instructor also through the American Red Cross. The Captain also provides captain services at various coastal ports during pre-hurricane days and will be found sporadically driving the Kontiki Boat on Fox Lake. And, of course, the Captain is also a pilot J
Upon returning to Malibu, the Captain scurried over to Catalina Island and developed a relationship with a local dive shop to pursue a scuba career path. That turned into the Captain himself living on the island and finishing his Dive Master certification while studying for the California Bar Exam. At the end of the season, Captain Bob followed his new seasonal friends to Maui and worked on a dive boat (among other places) for a year and regularly played with the sharks, turtles, lobsters and eels. The Captain almost stayed. But a law career awaited and the Captain ultimately shipwrecked on the shores of Lake Michigan, taking shelter on the north side of Chicago. Upon retiring from the practice of law, Captain Bob finally bought his own boat with several friends. Together they explored Lake Michigan and many of its channels when the Captain discovered yet another calling.
